Option I — Attitude Estimation · Architecture overview · SM3324 Product Datasheet Rev 1.0
Overview

Option I runs an on-chip Extended Kalman Filter that fuses inertial, magnetic, barometric, and LiDAR measurements into a continuous attitude and altitude estimate. All computation runs on the STM32 host MCU; no external co-processor. Outputs are delivered over USB at 2400.96 Hz in the O-mode frame format (words [1]–[15]).

Design Notes
Linearisation point Error-state formulation: the filter tracks small perturbations around a nominal quaternion trajectory, keeping the covariance matrix Euclidean and avoiding singularities.
Update scheduling Each sensor triggers its own measurement update asynchronously at its natural ODR. The propagation step runs every IMU cycle regardless of pending updates.
Magnetic disturbance Mag update is gated: if the measured field magnitude deviates significantly from the calibrated reference norm, the update is skipped for that cycle.
Altitude fusion Barometer and LiDAR corrections are applied independently. LiDAR is range-limited; barometer provides long-range absolute reference. No explicit sensor arbitration logic is exposed.
Calibration dependency Gyro zero-bias and accel scale/offset seeds from the L-command calibration are loaded at startup. The filter diverges on yaw if mag hard/soft-iron correction (Phase 3) was not performed.
Noise tuning Key EKF process, measurement, gate, and height-fusion parameters are adjustable at run time with E key value. Values are RAM-only until s is sent.

Note: This page describes the architectural role of each measurement class within the filter. Public EKF tuning keys are function-level names such as heading_noise or range_height_noise; raw sensor part names are intentionally not used as tuning keys.

EKF Runtime Tuning — 2/2

PAGE 6
Continued from EKF Architecture Note · Command E / Flash Save · SM3324 Product Datasheet Rev 1.0

Continuation: This is the second half of the EKF chapter. Architecture concepts remain on Page 5; runtime-adjustable parameters and commands are isolated here to keep the chapter readable.

Runtime Tuning Policy

EKF parameters are exposed for controlled integration tuning only. Values take effect in RAM immediately, but are not persistent until s is sent. Do not adjust these parameters without a repeatable test baseline; incorrect values can destabilise attitude or height estimation.

EKF Runtime Tuning — Commands E / s
FormatE? reads all RAM values; E key value changes RAM immediately; s saves current values to Flash. Power-up reloads the last saved Flash record.

IMU / Mag Calibration — Command L
TriggerSend 'L' + LF while stream is stopped — STM enters interactive calibration mode and prints a menu
Phase 1 — GyroPlace board motionless on a flat surface → press Enter → firmware collects gyro zero-bias samples → Gyro done
Phase 2 — Accel6-face gravity calibration: present each face upward, press Enter per face (ACC 1/6 … ACC 6/6) → Accel done
Phase 3 — MagRotate board slowly through all 3-D orientations → press Enter when all axes swept → Measured calibration:
StorageCalibration offsets + scale factors are written to on-chip Flash by the calibration flow. EKF tuning values are written only when s is sent. If Flash fails, values apply in RAM only and are lost on power-cycle.
PrerequisiteO mode requires a stored calibration. Firmware returns ERR IMU calibration missing and stops output if none is found.

Browser-Based Test & Visualisation Tool · SM3324 Product Datasheet Rev 1.0
Overview

sm3324_dashboard.html is a self-contained, zero-install browser application for SM3324 development and testing. Open it in Edge or Chrome (Web Serial API required; Firefox not supported), click Connect Port, and select the SM3324 CDC ACM device. No driver installation is needed on any OS. Host baud-rate setting is irrelevant — the transport is USB Full-Speed virtual serial.

Connection & Streaming
Browser requirementChromium-based (Edge / Chrome) — Web Serial API
Connect flowClick Connect Port → select SM3324 CDC ACM port → port opens at 2 Mbaud (host setting is a placeholder)
Start streamingClick a mode button in the side panel (e.g. V 300k, O) — dashboard sends the corresponding ASCII command + LF automatically
Stop streamingClick ■ Stop — sends 'o' + LF; firmware halts output. 's' is reserved for Flash save.
IMU auto-initSelecting O mode first sends 'o', waits 110 ms, then sends 'O' — this reset sequence is mandatory for reliable IMU alignment
Frame syncDashboard scans all 32 byte offsets, locks on ≥ 6 consecutive valid counter frames before rendering
Waveform Display
ADC modesReal-time oscilloscope-style trace; canvas redraws at display frame rate (~60 Hz), data ingested via Web Worker
IMU mode (O)4 × 4 grid of mini-panels: Gyro XYZ, Accel XYZ, Mag XYZ, Roll/Pitch/Yaw, Temperature, Pressure, Humidity, Altitude — each with a rolling waveform
STFT panelShort-Time Fourier Transform rendered below the ADC waveform; nperseg configurable (default 1024 samples); dB scale −100 to 0 dB; always active in single-channel modes
Gain / offsetPer-channel vertical scale and offset adjustable in the side panel
Capture & Export
Stream modeClick ▶ Stream to begin continuous live display; no data is saved
Capture modeClick ⏱ Capture to start recording aligned raw frames to memory; click again to stop and download
ADC exportCaptured ADC frames saved as .wav (16-bit PCM, sample rate = active kSPS); compatible with Audacity, MATLAB, Python scipy
IMU exportCaptured IMU frames saved as timestamped .csv with labelled columns (Gyro XYZ, Accel XYZ, Mag XYZ, Roll, Pitch, Yaw, Pressure, Temperature, Humidity, Altitude)
LogAll commands sent and firmware responses printed to the in-page log console; calibration session has a separate resizable log pane
EKF tuning panelReads E?, sends E key value for all function-level parameters, and sends s to save them to Flash
IMU Calibration Wizard (Option I)
AccessExpand the Calibration panel in the side panel; click Start L Cal
Phase 1 — GyroDashboard prompts: place board motionless → click Next (sends LF) → firmware reports Gyro done
Phase 2 — Accel6-face gravity sequence: dashboard shows face index (1/6 … 6/6); click Next per face
Phase 3 — MagSlowly rotate board through all orientations → click Next; firmware reports Measured calibration:
ResultDashboard displays Flash write OK (persists across power cycles) or Flash write FAILED (RAM only — recalibrate on next power-up)
